President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday in an attempt to hammer out a peace deal in the Russia-Ukraine war. Zelensky has also confirmed that he will be meeting Trump on Sunday.

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky follows discussions held between Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, as well as top negotiators for Ukraine and Russia.

According to a report from Axios, a US official said, “We've gone as far as possible with the Russians and the Ukrainians. We've made more progress in the last two weeks than the last year. We want to push the ball into the goal. We're heading in the right direction.”

“I can’t say right now if anything will be finalized,” Zelensky told reporters on Friday. “This meeting is to work out issues as much as possible. All issues where we have questions or disagreements, we will definitely raise them.”

Early on Friday, Zelensky said that Ukrainian officials had “agreed on a meeting at the highest level – with President Trump in the near future. A lot can be decided before the New Year. Glory to Ukraine!”

The Ukrainian leader said that the plan between himself and Trump was “90 percent” agreed to, but did not say if there would be a final plan reached. Discussions between the parties have continued through Christmas. On Friday, the Kremlin said that Yuri Ushakov, who is a top aide to Vladimir Putin, had been speaking to US negotiators.

Earlier this week, Zelensky claimed that the US, as part of the negotiations, has agreed to security guarantees if Russia invades Ukraine. "The US and Europe will provide Ukraine with security guarantees. If Russia invades Ukraine there will be a military response and sanctions will be reinstated,” Zelensky said.
