On Wednesday at 8 pm EST former Fox News host Tucker Carlson made a surprise appearance on Twitter, breaking his silence after his exit the network two days prior.
The two-minute video, delivered in Carlson's iconic monologue style, destroyed his former cable news slot in views, with millions tuning in to hear him speak free from the chains of a network.
Within two hours of posting the video, it had been viewed nearly 5 million times, and by the end of the night, views were in the tens of millions. In contrast, Carlson's old time slot at Fox garnered roughly 1.7 million views on Wednesday night following his ouster. On a typical night, Carlson would receive around 3 million views.
"One of the first things you realize when you step outside the noise for a few days," Carlson began, "is how many genuinely nice people there are in this country, kind of decent people, people who really care about what's true and a bunch of hilarious people."
He mentioned "how unbelievably stupid most of the debates you see on television are," noting that in the grand scheme of things, "they're completely irrelevant. They mean nothing."
"When honest people say what's true calmly and without embarrassment, they become powerful," Carlson continued. "At the same time, the liars who've been trying to silence them shrink and they become weaker. That's the iron law of the universe ... As long as you can hear the words there is hope."
Users quickly pointed out that Carlson was receiving far more views posting directly to social media than via his old cable news slot.
"Twitter is the future," Ian Miles Cheong said. "Make this a daily thing, you'll get subscribers."
Other users expressed their disappointment with Fox via memes, slamming the network for letting go of its most popular personality.
While Fox has been struggling since Carlson's departure, the longtime host has appeared to be living his best life, spending more time with his wife and four children at their Florida estate.
