The race for Michigan Governor was called early in the morning for Democratic incumbent Whitmer, securing a second term. As of Wednesday afternoon, Politico reported that Whitmer had garnered 54.1 percent of the state's vote, with nearly 90 percent of the vote being counted.
In her statement, which was released shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Dixon said, "I called Governor Whitmer this morning to concede and wish her well."
"Michigan’s future success rests not in elected officials or government, but all of us. It is incumbent upon all of us to help our children read, support law enforcement, and grow our economy," Dixon continued. "Thank you to our volunteers and supporters for working so hard to forge a better Michigan. We came up short, but we will never stop fighting for our families."
Dixon won the GOP primary in August after receiving an endorsement from Donald Trump. Her vow to fight back against the "heavy hand of big government ideological liberals", skyrocketing crime rates, and "radical gender and race ideology," resonated strongly with Republican voters.
Governor Whitmer became notorious in the last two years for her particularly heavy-handed lockdown measures, measures that she herself violated on multiple occasions. These "unconstitutional" executive orders also resulted in her impeachment last year, with claims that she "ignored court orders. Violated our Constitutional rights. Completely ignored due process and the legislature. Weaponized contract tracing databases to aid democrat campaigns."
