She told the crowd, “Independent-minded people like myself, who love our country and are committed to the Constitution and to freedom, the Democrat party has no home for people like us. But we do have a home in the Republican party where we are welcomed with open arms by President Trump and so many of you who love our country.”
Gabbard, who represented Hawaii's Second District in Congress from 2013 through 2021 as a Democrat, said her decision was due to her respect for former President Donald Trump's leadership "to transform the Republican Party and bring it back to the party of the people and the party of peace."
The former Democratic presidential candidate continued, "I'm proud to stand here with you today, President Trump, and announce that I'm joining the Republican Party. I am joining the party of the people. The party of Equality. The party that was founded to fight against and end slavery in this country. It is the party of common sense and the party that is led by a president who has the courage and strength to fight for peace."
In 2022, Gabbard, who also holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserves, left the Democratic Party saying at the time, "I can no longer remain in today's Democratic Party that's under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism, who actively worked to undermine our God-given freedoms that are enshrined in our Constitution, who are hostile to people of faith and spirituality, demonize the police, will protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, who believe in open borders, who weaponize the national security state to go after their political opponents. And above all, were dragging us ever closer to NUCLEAR WAR."
She added, "Now I believe in a government, that's of the people, by the people, and for the people. Unfortunately, today's Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government that is of, by, and for the powerful elite. I'm calling on my fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party. If you can no longer stomach the direction that the so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country. I invite you to join me."
