Around 6:30 pm on Friday, a 42-year-old man who has not been identified, 57-year-old Jackie Billini, and her dog were shot and killed while out on a walk on 165th Street near Edgecombe Avenue in the Washington Heights area of New York City

Sources told the New York Post, that Billini was shot in the head and neck, while the man was hit in the face and shoulder. The dog was also shot during the event.

One neighbor told NY Daily News, that there were "a lot of shots, and then people were running that way."

Another said, "It was a man and a woman, and they’re shot in the head. And he shot and killed the dog. It was brutal. That was a message."

Bellini's family said that she works as an analyst for the state court system in the Bronx, and was the victim of an attempted home break-in by a man with a hammer in April.

The event, which was captured on camera, showed a man attempting to force his way into the house, swinging the hammer at the woman, her daughter, and her daughter's boyfriend. At one point the man broke Bellini's arm during the assault.

A 32-year-old man identified by the Bellini family was charged by a Manhattan grand jury with burglary assault with a weapon with intent to injury, assault, and other felonies, according to court documents. Jackie's nephew Luis Bellini suspects that the suspect in the murder "should have been locked up, but they let him go."

The Manhattan district attorney's office has faced tremendous scrutiny in recent years for being soft on crime. In July, The Police Benevolent Association of New York warned residents that "DA Bragg is not on your side, he is on the side of the repeat offenders."

In August 2022, the NYPD put out a statement that revealed, "Career and Violent Criminals Are Exploiting New York's Criminal Justice System." This showed that 211 people had been arrested at least three times for burglary that year.

According to NYC Crime Stats, there has been a 5.7 percent increase in felony assaults in the city over the same period in 2022.
