Police logs released under the Freedom of Information Act describe multiple high-tech drones “targeting” and pursuing the helicopter at high speeds.
Newly released documents about unidentified aerial objects over a US air base in England contradict the official explanation given last year regarding a near-collision involving a UK police helicopter.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, documents obtained through Britain’s Freedom of Information Act show that during a November 22, 2024 flight, a National Police Air Service EC135 helicopter was forced to take emergency evasive action after two fast-moving objects appeared to “target” the aircraft and pursue it over RAF Lakenheath, a major US military installation in Suffolk. The pilot reported taking a steep dive to avoid impact as the objects matched the helicopter’s speed.
The Daily Mail reported that it obtained images taken from the helicopter showing one of the unidentified objects. A UK aviation safety board previously attributed the incident to pilots misidentifying a nearby American F-15 fighter jet. However, police logs released under the Freedom of Information Act describe multiple high-tech drones “targeting” and pursuing the helicopter at high speeds.
“They were forced to take emergency evasive action in relation to a drone which came within a dangerously close proximity to them,” an incident log from Suffolk Police stated. “They had to perform an emergency dive and described that they were pursued in the dive by two drones who matched their speed approx 165 knots and then pursued them for several minutes out of the area.”
A UK military source who viewed the full 30-minute infrared video from the helicopter told the Daily Mail there was more to the encounter than a brush with a fighter jet.
“In the 30-minute video with pilot audio, nobody mentions F-15s,” the source said. “They only talk about the drones. How they're basically mirroring the helicopter's movements. How fast the drones are going. That they're basically forcing them out of the area.”
The source added that the footage shows one object performing maneuvers that would not be possible for a fighter jet.
“A fixed-wing craft is caught on the video, where you can see a corkscrew move,” the source added. “An F-15 cannot make a small corkscrew turn like that.”
The Daily Mail also reported that a short section of the video shows a small object moving on the helicopter’s infrared camera, and that police logs from November 20 to 22 reveal numerous drone sightings near three US Air Force-operated bases in Suffolk and Norfolk, including RAF Feltwell, RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. One police report from Lakenheath recorded an officer using night vision goggles who saw “5-6 drones” near the A1065 highway moving back over the airfield.
A crime report from November 21 stated that “10-15 drones” were flying around the bases and possibly entering restricted airspace.
The investigation was turned over to the UK Ministry of Defence Police, which has not released its findings.
