Washington Post objectifies Doug Emhoff as 'modern-day sex symbol'

The Washington Post published an opinion piece on Friday that labeled Doug Emhoff as a "modern-day sex symbol" as well as a "progressive sex symbol."

The opinion, penned by columnist Catherine Rampell, after labeling Emhoff opens to, "Move over, Ryan Gosling. The modern female fantasy is embodied by the man who might soon become our first First Gentleman." The paragraph is perhaps a direct reference to the "Barbie" movie.



The opinion continues, adding that the most important thing to the "sexy sobriquet" (nickname) of "modern-day sex symbol" Doug Emhoff is that "Emhoff is secure enough with his own masculinity to sometimes prioritize his wife’s ambitions over his own," adding that he is a "hunk" as a result.

The opinion, however, does not bring up that the "hunk" had an affair in his first marriage, getting his kids' nanny pregnant. The nanny reportedly did not keep the child. Rampell also compared Emhoff to NFL player Jonathan Owens because Owens wanted to cheer on his wife Simone Biles at the Olympics and likened Emhoff to a "fantasy man."

The Washington Post columnist then added that Emhoff's relationship with Harris reminded her of romantic comedies where "male suitors prove their worth by agreeing to walk away from their own professional accomplishments to prioritize their partner’s."

Further objectifying Emhoff as the "modern-day sex symbol," Rampell adds that this arrangement is characteristic of the "Emhoffian 'wife guy' fantasy." Rampell further claims, "Ever since the sexual revolution and the post-industrialization of the US economy (i.e., the shift away from 'manly' jobs, such as manufacturing and coal mining), some American men have understandably experienced status anxiety."

Rampell then claimed that Donald Trump has "exploited" this trend "instead of helping men appreciate how they fit into their evolving families and communities today." She then took jabs at vice-presidential nominee Senator JD Vance (R-OH) for expressing the view that "normal Americans care more about their families than their jobs, and want a family policy that doesn't shunt their kids into crap daycare," along with other past comments.

Despite Vance's wife, Usha, having a successful career as a lawyer and only putting it on pause when Vance took up the task of running for vice president, Rampell still wrote that he has "retrograde views on gender."

Rampell ended the piece, suggesting that "Emhoff looks like a dreamboat" for what women want in a man.
