Rep. Mike Johnson asked Generals Mark Milley, Kenneth McKenzie, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin who was to blame for the "disastrous" withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"My question for all of you is very simple," Johnson asked during a hearing before the US House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday. "Where does the blame lie?"

Secretary Austin said that he was "responsible for everything that happens that DOD does. And it does a lot."

"I remain focused on defending this country, and that's going to be my focus for the foreseeable future. Secondly, I would remind you that we just evacuated 124,000 people—" Austin said before Johnson shut him down.

"I appreciate that you think that was a big success, evacuation, but the blame for the disastrous withdrawal, which everyone agrees, was a disaster, who is the blame for that?" Johnson asked.

When no answer was forthcoming from the three officials, Johnson said "I'll let the silence speak for itself."
