Kirby further said that Americans must get to the Kabul airport on their own, though the city is now in the hands of enemies to the United States.

John Kirby, United States Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, claims that the Pentagon does not have an "exact count" of how many Americans are currently trapped behind enemy lines in Afghanistan.

Kirby was asked about the specifics, "how many Americans do you believe to be in Afghanistan right now?"

"Well, we think there are certainly thousands of Americans," Kirby replied. "We don't have an exact count right now. I would say somewhere, best guess, between five and ten thousand that are near Kabul."

Kirby further said that Americans must get to the Kabul airport on their own, though the city is now in the hands of enemies to the United States.

"There was a message put out by the the Secretary of, sorry, the State Department, advising those Americans about how to cue up and how to get to the airport. So, now that security's better, they don't need to necessarily shelter in place, and they can begin movement to the airport for processing for flights out."

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK) had previously offered to help stranded Americans while they were waiting for their federal government to ask, and received a large response from people on the ground in Afghanistan.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-MO) had harsh words for the Biden administration for what he calls an "embarrassment," referring to the administration's overly-quick withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the poor handling of the resulting chaos.
