The Salt Lake City Police Department has released the body cam footage of an incident between an officer and a man who had taken a hostage by holding a knife to their throat.
The video shows the officer shooting 34-year-old Andrew Jacob Preece. The incident took place on July 25.
Police were responding to a call that two men had stolen property and appeared intoxicated. When officers arrived, one man grabbed a passerby and started a hostage situation with a knife "the size of a forearm," one eyewitness said.

According to SLPD Captain Richard Lewis, officers gave clear verbal commands to the suspect to drop the knife.
"One officer engaged the suspect in dialog, encouraging him to drop the knife and telling him, 'It’s not worth it.' The first shot hit the suspect, but the suspect continued to hold the victim at knifepoint. Both officers discharged their weapons as the hostage broke free and the suspect fell to the ground. Officers secured the scene and rendered aid."
The officer made a clean shot after several warnings, neutralizing the kidnapper. The man was announced dead at the scene. An investigation is underway.
