The Biden administration made it clear during Tuesday’s press briefing that they do not support getting rid of federal prisons in a widespread blow to progressives like Rep. Rashida Tlaib who recently touted defunding police and related efforts.
Peter Doocy asked the question, and this time Jen Psaki didn’t feel the need to "circle back" at a later date, whatsoever.
"A couple of days ago, President Biden was in Michigan and he was thanking Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib," Doocy begins. "Now she is supporting legislation that would release all federal prisoners within ten years. Would the President ever support that?"
"Well, the President did enjoy visiting Michigan and visiting Congresswoman Tlaib’s district. But let me be absolutely clear: the President does not support abolishing prisons. He does not support defunding the police, he thinks measures like that will make us less safe and he would not support legislation that includes it," Psaki begins.
A new Axios interview with Rashida Tlaib and Jonathan Swan delved into this topic earlier this week. Swan didn’t shy away from directly asking her about the downsides of releasing people from the federal prison system into the general population within ten years.
What followed was claims by Tlaib of being represented, Swan stood by the fact that "the act [Tlaib] endorsed actually says release everyone."
It looks like the White House Press Secretary put her foot down on this one, by saying what Biden does support is "effective and accountable community policing and a fairer justice system and he supports investment in public health, education, the environment, housing, community-based programs."
"He knows there are steps and he believes there are steps that we know are going to reduce crime and make our neighborhoods safer but that is not one of them in his view."
In related news, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Monday published a letter to NYC’s District Attorney criticizing "excessive bail."
