The Republican-controlled State Legislature in Wisconsin has voted to overturn and repeal the statewide mask mandate bill put in place by Democratic Governor Tony Evers.

The vote came on Thursday, in concordance with a similar vote some days previously by the State Senate, which passed by a margin of 18 to 13. All Democrats and three dissenting Republicans voted against the measure.

According to local outlet KARE 11, the vote was originally scheduled for Jan. 28, but was postponed to allow for further debate on the issue.

Public opinion on this issue is extremely divided, with people on both sides of the issue voicing their opinions to elected officials.

This measure leaves Wisconsin as one of several states that currently do not have a statewide mandate in place for mask use. However, Evers has it in his power to issue a new order, which would then have to be repealed by both the Legislature and the Senate again in due course.

It is also worth noting that private and public companies and business owners are still free to insist on mask wearing on their own. Also, any local mask mandates remain in effect.
