X ends revenue share program for users, replaces it with 'original content' incentive plan

Elon Musk is completely overhauling the way creators and influencers are paid on X. The company announced that it will phase out its existing Revenue Sharing program and replace it with a new system called Original Content Rewards. X will no longer accept new participants into the Revenue Sharing program, while creators already enrolled will continue receiving payments through Sept. 7.

Beginning Sept. 8, creators will be able to apply for the brand-new program. Participants will still be required to subscribe to one of X’s Premium tiers and meet certain eligibility requirements, including having at least 500 verified followers and receiving 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over a 90-day period.

X said qualifying content can include original reporting and analysis, photos and videos created by the user, as well as original memes and graphics. Commentary can also qualify, although creators who regularly use content made by others will need to add "meaningful original value" for their posts to qualify.

X executive Allegra Jacchia said the existing Revenue Sharing program had reached a place where its incentives were misaligned.

"Creators should be focused on bringing net new content to the platform instead of maximizing payouts," Jacchia said. "We could have kept adding more rules and exceptions, but ultimately the better decision was to start fresh and build a program designed from day one to reward originality."

She also said that the company plans to continue refining the program by improving its models and increasing standards over time.
