Markham resident Steven Wolfer is now facing more sexual assault charges in connection with incidents that date back to the 1980s after a new victim came forward.
Based on what police allege, Wolfer had a number of jobs and volunteer roles that gave him access to children for more than two decades. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and was a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of York Region in the 1980s. More recently, he was a supply elementary school teacher with the York Region Catholic District School Board from 2000-2004.
CP24 reported that the investigation that led to Wolfer's arrest started back in April when a victim came forward and told York Region police that he had been sexually assaulted by an older man when he was 12-years-old in 1989. On June 22, another victim told police a similar account that happened in 1983 when he was 14-years-old.
The new victim knew the suspect through church and a school he attended in the areas of Yonge Street and King Road in Richmond Hill. It turned out, Wolfer was a volunteer at that said church and was a sports coach at the school.
Wolfer has now been charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of gross indecency. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 31.
Police said Thursday that their investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with further information to contact them.
