Angel Studios is already moving forward with a sequel to Young Washington after the historical drama posted a strong opening weekend at the box office.
According to Deadline, director, producer and co-writer Jon Erwin announced that a sequel, titled 1776, is now in development. The announcement came just days after Young Washington debuted over the Fourth of July weekend.
Erwin shared the news in a video filmed at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, saying one of the most common questions he has received since the film's release is whether Washington's story will continue.
"The answer is yes," Erwin said. "We are working on another one right now. We have just begun writing another Revolutionary War epic on the year 1776."
He also said that the next film will be even bigger than the first.
"If you think Washington's big, wait for 1776. It's epic in every way. Another incredible chapter in this man's life and legacy," he said.
The sequel announcement follows a successful opening weekend for Young Washington. The film brought in more than $20 million domestically, beating early projections and becoming Angel Studios' biggest live-action opening to date, according to Deadline.
The movie tells the story of George Washington during the French and Indian War, before he became commander of the Continental Army and later the nation's first president. William Franklyn-Miller stars as Washington, alongside Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Kelsey Grammer and Mary-Louise Parker.
Very little is known about 1776 so far, but the title points to one of the most important years of the American Revolution. While no release date has been announced, Erwin said the script is already being written as Angel Studios looks to continue Washington's story following the strong response to the first film.
