The suspect had 19 prior felony convictions.
Grier was subsequently hit with a slew of charges, including murder, 14 counts of kidnapping, 13 counts of aggravated assault, one count of first-degree hijacking of a motor vehicle, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and one count of possession of a firearm of knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.
According to CNN, Grier got on the Gwinnett County transit vehicle shortly before 4:30 pm, and a short time later, 911 calls began coming in from those on the bus. When police arrived and confronted him, he told the bus driver to start driving. The ensuing chase led police down highways, residential streets, and backroads.
The bus was finally halted on Hugh Howell Road in Stone Mountain when a Georgia state trooper shot the engine. After the vehicle rolled to a stop, members of law enforcement surrounded it, and ensured the passengers got off safely. Grier was then arrested.
The sole victim was taken to hospital with what appeared to be gunshot wounds, but succumbed to their injuries. They have not been identified, with authorities having yet to notify their next of kin.
As CNN reports, he had a total of 19 prior felony convictions, though it was not revealed what the charges had been in those cases. The incident came just hours after another convicted felon shot four people at the busy Peachtree Center.
"It's unfortunate that today, in two different instances, I am coming before the media with Chief Schierbaum talking about acts of gun violence in our region," Mayor Andre Dickens lamented, per Atlanta News First, offering his sympathy to those who were forced to endure the "frightening journey."
"Let me be clear," he added, "we're talking about gun violence that is as a result of too many people having guns in their hands."
