Two Cobb County sheriff’s deputies were ambushed and killed in Thursday night while serving a warrant on a Marietta-area home in Georgia.

During a press conference early Friday morning, Sheriff Craig Owens said deputies were serving a warrant when one of the suspects opened fire on the officers from a vehicle. Then a second suspect began shooting at the officers from the house.

The suspects were initially barricaded after killing the officers in the line of duty but surrendered after a four hour standoff with SWAT and FAST teams and are now in custody.

The identities of the fallen deputies have not been released.

Owens said, "From my understanding, the deputies had made an attempt at the home, knocked on the door, rang the doorbell no one came to the house. As they were getting back to their car the vehicle drove up and they assumed it was the suspect who lived there and as they got back to the car as he got into his car shots were fired."

At approximately 7:48 pm, dispatchers first received a report something was wrong when the deputies were able to radio in the shooting.

According to Fox 5, a dispatcher broadcasted over the emergency band, "We have an officer down," which was followed by acknowledgments from law enforcement officers rushing to the scene. Firefighters and medics were dispatched as law enforcement arrived at the scene.

Sheriff Owens added, "My two deputies were ambushed and killed."

At approximately 8 pm, FOX 5 reported two ambulances headed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital were escorted by a long line of police cruisers.

Just before 9 pm news broke that both deputies had been pronounced dead.

In a statement, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation offered its condolences in a tweet. "Our condolences go out to Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office after the loss of two deputies tonight in the line of duty."
