A new poll has revealed that 44 percent of Americans believe the US will go to war against China in the next five years, an even split against those who don’t believe the nations will engage in battle.

The Rasmussen poll found that 15 percent of US likely voters said the event is very likely and 29 percent said it was somewhat likely. In contrast, 29 percent said the event was not very likely and 15 percent said it was not at all likely. 12 percent of voters were not sure.

This is down from February, when 48 percent said it was very likely or somewhat lively.

Split by political parties, Democrats were more likely to say war with China would not happen, with a combined 50 percent saying that this was not very likely or not likely at all, compared to 37 percent who said it was somewhat likely or very likely.

GOP voters were more likely to say the event was likely, with 53 percent saying it was very or somewhat likely, and 35 percent saying it was not very or not at all likely.

Independent voters were more split, with 41 percent saying that it was likely to occur and 47 percent saying it was unlikely.

The poll also found that US voters have a poor view of President Biden’s handling of national security, while displaying confidence in the military’s ability to defeat foreign enemies.

47 percent of voters said that Biden has a poor handling on national security issues, while 13 percent said he had a fair handling, 16 percent said he had a good handling, and 23 percent said he had an excellent handling on national security.

A large percentage of Democrats, 41 percent, said Biden had an excellent handling, while the majority of GOP and independent voters, 70 and 53 percent, respectively, said he had a poor handling.

40 percent of voters said they were very confident in the US military’s ability to defeat foreign enemies, with 28 percent saying they were somewhat confident, 18 percent saying not very confident, and 9 percent saying they were not at all confident.

The poll was conducted on June 15 and between June 18 and 19 of 1,051 US likely voters, and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
