45 percent of US adults prefer the football team name Washington Redskins over the Washington, DC-based football team’s new name, the Washington Commanders, according to a new poll from The Economist.

The poll, which surveyed 1,702 US citizens, had 45 percent of those who took the survey prefer Washington Redskins while only 35 percent of US adults favored the new name of Washington Commanders. 20 percent of US adults were not sure on the subject.

The results of the poll come as President Donald Trump has reiterated a call for the NFL team to change back to their original name.

Trump said at the time, "The Washington 'Whatever’s' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!"

Men overall favored the original name 53 percent to 33 percent, with women being pretty evenly split, at 37 percent favoring Redskins and 36 percent favoring Commanders.

Republicans favored using the original name 74 to 11 percent, with 15 percent unsure. Democrats leaned more in favor of keeping the new name, with 56 percent favoring Washington Commanders and 20 percent favoring the Washington Redskins.

The name change came in 2020 in the months following the death of George Floyd as racial riots ensued around the country over concerns with political correctness. At a similar time, DEI and other left-wing policies were starting to become widespread in the corporate business world.

During the following NFL season, the league featured the phrase “end racism” in end zones at games and similar signaling was seen in other national sports leagues.
