Lara's son was transported to Boston Children's Hospital where he received "several stitches."
Kendra Lara, 33, allegedly crashed through a metal fence and slammed into the left side of a home in the Jamaica Plains district while driving a 2019 Honda Civic with her 7-year-old son inside who was not secured in a car seat, New York Post reports. The vehicle was totaled in the wreck.
Zaire, Lara's son, was transported to Boston Children's Hospital where he received "several stitches" stemming from injuries sustained in the crash but is expected to make a full recovery, according to Boston Globe. A spokesperson for Lara's office said that the council member reportedly suffered "some cuts and will probably require some stitches."
The police report stated that a witness reportedly saw Lara driving at a high rate of speed as he began to pull out of his parking space. He claims to have watched the councilor take an erratic left turn and then crash into the house.
Lara told police that she was forced to swerve in order to avoid a collision.
Police said that the councilor was driving an unregistered vehicle and her license had been revoked during the time of the crash. The police department submitted a 51A report to the Department of Children and Families citing "neglect and failure to use a proper car seat for the child’s safety." Lara is now under investigation for "child abuse and neglect," NY Post reports.
Massachusetts state law requires children under the age of eight or shorter than 57 inches to be secured in a booster seat while riding in a vehicle.
The socialist city council member is know for her support of the "defund the police" movement and advocating for the abolition of prisons. A few months ago, Lara was the subject of an explicit videotape circulated of Boston school teacher Owen Thomas discussing partaking in sex acts with Lara, NY Post reports. The Democratic Socialist also has a history of controversial anti-Semitic tweets.
