An activist teacher made a video showcasing a sample of the “LGBTQIA” literature she recommends teachers have in their classrooms in order to create an inclusive environment for queer students. One of the books is This Book is Gay, the pornographic novel that has sparked outrage and protests across the US.
The teacher is one of seven “abolitionist” teachers who creates content for the TikTok account @4burnitdown2.0. The group is dedicated to abolishing gender and “heteronormativity” and to promoting queer theory and “inclusive teaching.”
In the video, teachers are told that “LGBTQIA literature is expressive, and allows our queer students to see themselves, and to know that they are totally normal.” As well, teachers learn that “LGBTQIA curriculum benefits all students, helps promote understanding and acceptance,” and that in 2021, “being inclusive is no longer a choice.”
However, many parents disagree that schools need to provide children with pornography in order to be safe and inclusive spaces. The Book is Gay has been highly controversial since its publication in 2015 due to the sexually explicit scenes in the book.
One section contains graphic instructions on how to pleasure a man, complete with a diagram of a naked man, and accompanied by a page titled Doing the Sex which gives tips on how to give a good “handie,” what makes a bad “handie,” and how to perform oral sex.
"Rub the head of his cock back and forth with your hand … Oral sex is popping another dude's peen in your mouth [and in] order to be able to cum at all, you ... may need to finish off with a handie," the book explains to its target audience of teenage boys.
This was the book that sparked parent protests in Dearborn, Michigan after members of the Muslim community learned that it was to be found on the shelves in school libraries, and Christy Wade, a North Carolina mother and member of parent rights group Mom’s for Liberty read the same excerpts before the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board after it was found in a seventh grade classroom.
In another book recommendation video on the @4burnitdown2.0 account aimed at a younger demographic, there is the book I Am Jazz, which the educator recommends reading to young children to promote “equality for all women.”I Am Jazz is a picture book that tells the real-life story of Jazz Jennings, who was socially transitioned as a young child, put on puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones as an adolescent and then had vaginoplasty at age 18.
Jennings’ surgeon has stated that Jennings had never orgasmed prior to the surgery, and was unlikely to afterwards, and that the surgery was especially complicated because Jennings had never gone through puberty so there was very little penile tissue to work with.
Jennings experienced serious complications post-op and now suffers from an eating disorder. Young children only get the heartwarming beginning of the tragic story in the picture book though, when Jazz is happy to finally be allowed to wear dresses and sparkles.
