Roku users have been given a new form of entertainment—a 24-hour television channel made entirely from AI-generated films, adverts and other bizarre content.
The channel, Fairground AI, was quietly added to Roku’s free channel lineup earlier this week and broadcasts AI-generated programming around the clock, with even its advertisements created using artificial intelligence. The result has already attracted ridicule online, with viewers mocking the channel as the latest example of the rapidly expanding flood of low-quality AI-generated content. One observer joked that it was finally proof that “AI can unleash the creative potential” of people who cannot write or understand pacing, transitions or human facial expressions.
Some of the programming appears to be AI-generated films attempting to imitate established genres, with one medieval-style production featuring bizarre physics, awkward dialogue and characters who appear unable to blink. In one scene, a character holding what appears to be a bizarre hybrid of a crossbow and rifle fires a projectile which travels backwards into the weapon. Other sequences reportedly feature enormous cosmic creatures attacking spaceships and futuristic cities while uncanny-looking humans and aliens flee the destruction.
The channel was created by Colin Petrie-Norris, who described it as the first fully ad-supported streaming television channel dedicated to AI-generated content. According to Variety, Fairground AI's programming is produced by creators Petrie-Norris discovered through social media, including Kelly Boesch, Kavan the Kid's Phantom X Studio, filmmaker Ryan Phillips, Wonder Studios and Massive Studios.
Petrie-Norris previously promised that the channel's programming would be far removed from the low-quality AI content flooding social media, saying creators were paying close attention to story details.
