Following Terry McAuliffe's defeat in the Virginia gubernatorial race, AOC released a video suggesting the result could have been different if only he had engaged with progressives.
The results of the Virginia gubernatorial race, in which Republican Glenn Youngkin came out victorious, have caused Democrats to do a bit of soul searching. McAuliffe's loss was blamed on everything from white women to "white supremacy," with every Democrat seemingly baffled by Virginians' choice.
In a recent video posted to Instagram, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered her analysis of the situation.
"I know that Virginia was a huge bummer," she began, "and honestly if anything, I think the results show the limits of trying to run a fully 100% super moderated campaign."
AOC then blasted McAuliffe for ignoring the more radical wing of the Democrat supporters. She suggested that it is not possible to win with a campaign that "does not excite, speak to, or energize a progressive base."
"Frankly," she concluded, "we weren't even really invited to contribute on that race."
Following Youngkin's win, progressive groups tore into McAuliffe for his moderate campaign, criticizing it's lack of "a comprehensive pro-worker economic message," and "rebuttal to Republican race-baiting b*llsh*t."
"Put simply," states a letter from Battle Born Collective, Justice Democrats, Sunrise Movement, and United We Dream Action, "it was a campaign designed to fail."
