Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced in an interview with ABC News that he is seeking the Republican Nomination for president and his formal announcement will take place later in April. He said his reason for running is because he believes that "people want leaders that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts."

When asked about the indictment of former President Donald Trump he said "it is a distraction," and that he has to "talk about border security and the economy. The leadership of the country in the world."

Hutchinson also said that he thinks that Trump should drop out of the race because "the office is more important than any individual person."

According to ABC, when asked about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Hutchinson stated DeSantis "is doing an effective job in Florida," but Hutchinson prefers more of a "limited role of government," especially when it comes to small business regulation.

In 2021 Trump criticized Governor Hutchinson for vetoing legislation that would have made it a misdemeanor for a doctor to prescribe puberty blockers to minors. In an official statement, the former president endorsed the current Governor of Arkansas Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Hutchinson served from 2015 to 2023 as the Governor of Arkansas. From 1997 to 2001 he served the state in the US House of Representatives, and after that as an administrator for the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
