"This assassination attempt on a police officer sitting simply in her patrol vehicle, a mother of four, represents a level of depravity that shakes us to our core."

On Thursday morning, Officer Keona Holley became the latest victim of what is turning into an alarming trend of ambush attacks on law enforcement nationwide.

Holley was sitting in her police vehicle, parked on Pennington Avenue, when her assailants opened fire, shooting her multiple times.

The officer is currently fighting for her life while on life support in the Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland.

According to WTOP, she was in uniform and on duty at the time, but was not responding to any specific call, when someone started shooting at her sitting inside the patrol car. Holley then tried to escape, but wound up crashing the vehicle.

Maryland state Senate president Bill Ferguson stated to the media, "This assassination attempt on a police officer sitting simply in her patrol vehicle, a mother of four, represents a level of depravity that shakes us to our core."

"This is beyond the pale of anything remotely conceivable in our city. Simply put, things are broken and the trajectory we are on is totally unsustainable. It is time to hit reset," Ferguson further said after the ambush shooting.

Various organizations, including the FBI, ATF and Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police, have contributed to offer a reward of up to $59,000 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction over the attack. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has said he will match that reward, bringing the total amount to $118,000.

Similar attacks have also occurred in other areas of the country through 2021. An ambush attack in the Houston area left a deputy killed and two more injured. In another case, near the city of Los Angeles, two deputies were both shot at close range in the head in a similar ambush-style attack.
