Biden admin considers EO to close US-Mexico border at 4,000 illegal crossings per day

President Joe Biden is planning executive action that would shut down the border if daily crossings reach the threshold of 4,000 foreign nationals a day.  

According to the New York Post, a source with the White House said that the order would give Biden the ability to shut down the border if the threshold was met, just as stated in the border bill he said had to pass through Congress in order for him to approve it at the threshold of 5,000 a day. 

The legislative move from Congress would have given the DHS discretionary authority to carry out deportations, but they would have been made mandatory when illegal immigrants passed 5,000 per day over one week's time.  

The White House declined to comment on the matter when the outlet reached out. The US Border Patrol currently has over 10,000 illegal immigrants in custody across the nation, according to border and customs data obtained by the outlet.  

Five sectors of Border Patrol have surpassed their illegal immigrant holding capacity, with the region in San Diego keeping over 1,600 illegal immigrants in facilities meant for a maximum of 1,000.  

A spokeswoman for House Speaker Mike Johnson commented on the action, saying, that the executive order would "prove" that Biden “doesn’t need Congress to pass legislation to take action on the border.” 

In a statement on the proposed legislation with the 5,000 threshold that Biden said he needed to have passed by Congress, Biden wrote, “For everyone who is demanding tougher border control, this is the way to do it. If you’re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill and I will sign it.”
