“I’m fine. I don’t know about my brain, though.”
According to The New York Times, the 81-year-old Biden was attempting to reassure the gathering of over 20 Democratic governors that he could beat former President Donald Trump in November and govern effectively for four more years.
Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz attempted to quell the backlash to the story by saying, “President Bush went to bed at 9, and President Obama made dinner at 6:30. Normal presidents strike a balance, and so does Joe Biden. Hardly the same rigor as Donald Trump, who spends half of his day ranting on Truth Social about plans that would cause a recession and the other half golfing.”
Biden also reportedly said during the meeting, “I’m fine. I don’t know about my brain, though.” Biden’s campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon claimed Biden was joking. After the meeting, Democratic Govs. Wes Moore of Maryland, Kathy Hochul of New York, and Tim Walz of Minnesota, none of who are up for reelection, claimed during a press conference that Biden is “all in…to win it.”
In response to a reporter’s question, Walz dismissed any concerns about Biden’s age and health, saying the president is “fit for office.” And Biden’s debate performance opened the floodgates for more scrutiny and reporting on the president’s health, with sources describing a decline in his mental fitness.
