Since Joe Biden was elected and took office, the United States has experienced an unprecedented influx of people trying to cross the border illegally. While some are turned away, millions have been released into the country, or escaped custody, with the cost of providing for them being borne by the American taxpayer.

A new interim report compiled by the House Republicans' Committee on Homeland Security has revealed that the current administration's open-border policies could have locals on the hook for as much as $451 billion.

"Every day, millions of American taxpayer dollars are spent on costs directly associated with illegal immigration and the unprecedented crisis at the Southwest border sparked by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' policies," the report states, noting that, "Only a small fraction is ever recouped from the taxes paid by illegal aliens, with the rest falling on the shoulders of American citizens and lawful residents."

The authors break down all the costs associated with illegal immigration, including housing, education, medical care, law enforcement and welfare benefits.

The $451 billion estimate itself comes from a report by the Center for Immigration, which used New York City's data and applied it to the entire country. Researchers from the Big Apple found that it costs around $184 per day to care for a single adult migrant, going up to $339 for families with children.

A report compiled by the Federation for American Immigration Reform placed the figure closer to $150 billion, explaining that while illegal immigrants impose $182 billion in federal, state, and local costs, $31 billion is recouped via tax contributions.

FAIR has estimated that there are currently between 16.8 million and 29 million illegal immigrants in the United States, of whom 3.8 million have entered under Biden.

Following years of backlash over his administration's handling of the situation, the president recently asked Congress to approve $14 billion in funding for border security.
