A sophisticated smuggling tunnel believed to be used for human trafficking has been discovered at the El Paso border sector, connecting El Paso, Texas, to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) El Paso and US Border Patrol agents uncovered the tunnel on Friday, describing it as a "historic" discovery. The tunnel, which spans approximately four feet wide and six feet tall, features wooden beams for structural support, electrical wiring, and a ventilation system. According to authorities, the tunnel was likely constructed within the past year and extends from under the US-Mexico border into the Boone Street storm drain in South-Central El Paso, according to a report by KTSM.

"The uncovering of this tunnel showcases the success of our combined investigative efforts,” said HSI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Jason T. Stevens. “Transnational criminal organizations mistakenly think they can avoid detection by moving people and contraband underground. This recent discovery is a significant blow to their operations as it highlights our capability to disrupt their sophisticated smuggling networks.”

"The discovery of this tunnel and the follow-up investigation highlight the strong collaboration and dedication of our valued law enforcement partners — I want to express my gratitude to the federal, state and local departments supporting this case for their unwavering commitment to enhancing public safety,” he added.

Journalist Ali Bradley reported that authorities suspect it was used to smuggle and traffic Venezuelan women. Bradley noted that while such tunnels are more commonly found in the San Diego border region and that this discovery in El Paso is rare.

Border Patrol also commented on the discovery, with spokesman Claudio Herrera saying, “This is an historic event for the U.S. Border Patrol here in El Paso, Texas, along with multiple other federal, state, local, law enforcement agencies, including the government of Mexico."
