"But what we can do is make sure that we are doing our part to protect our residents in every possible way, that we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having large-scale economic impact."
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has said that her city will not cooperate with the incoming Trump administration’s vow to mass deport illegal immigrants from the country. This comes after Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said that the whole state would not comply.
"Elections have consequences," Wu told local news. "And the federal government is responsible for a certain set of actions and no individual city can reverse or override some parts of that."
"But what we can do is make sure that we are doing our part to protect our residents in every possible way, that we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having large-scale economic impact."
Wu cited Boston’s sanctuary city status under the Trust Act passed in 2014, which prohibits Boston police and other city departments from cooperating with ICE when it comes to detaining immigrants on civil warrants. It does allow for cooperation in criminal cases like human trafficking and cyber crimes, according to WBUR.
Shortly after Trump was named the president-elect, Governor Maura Healey said the state would "absolutely not" comply with the Trump administration requesting Massachusetts State Police to assist in mass deportations.
Other cities and states, such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Illinois, have said that they will not assist the Trump administration with these mass deportations.
Incoming border czar Tom Homan has called for illegal immigrants to "self deport," saying that as the administration first focuses on criminals and national security threats for deportation, there would be time for other illegal immigrants to get their affairs in order and leave the country.
