Three people are dead and nine more are missing after a suspected smuggling boat capsized off the coast of Del Mar, California Monday.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the overturned boat was discovered at around 6:30 am local time north of the Torrey Pines State Beach. Coast Guard spokesperson Adam Stanton said, "Potentially nine more individuals are unaccounted for. That nine number doesn’t mean they are in the water. They could have made it to shore."

Coast Guard spokesperson Hunter Schnabel said that there are "quite a few agencies involved currently" in assisting in looking for those who were on board, including the Coast Guard, San Diego Fire-Rescue, and lifeguards, both on the beach and in watercraft.
