Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has entered the New York City mayoral race, announcing his bid on Saturday.

The former New York governor enters the mayor's race as a perceived frontrunner as New York Mayor Eric Adams has been facing controversy in his term for being investigated for alleged bribery.

Cuomo made the announcement via X, emphasizing the need of someone with experience in order to lead the city. He cited issues with crime as well as others for the reason why he needs to be elected, and said that he can help "turn the city around."

“The city just feel threatening, out of control,” Cuomo said in the 17-minute video. “These conditions exist not as an act of God, but rather as an act of our political leaders. Or more precisely, the lack of intelligent action by many of our political leaders."

"That is why I announced my candidacy today for New York City," Cuomo added. The video did not mention Adams at all directly.

He briefly said that he has made mistakes in the past, “Did I always do everything right in my years of government service? Of course not. Would I do some things differently knowing what I know now? Certainly. Did I make mistakes? Some painfully. Definitely. And I believe I learned from them and that I am a better person for. And I hope to show you that every day."

Cuomo has been caught up in scandals with sexual harassment accusations and had been slammed in the past for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city that led to a number of deaths in nursing homes from the illness.

Amid the sexual harassment scandal, Cuomo resigned as Governor of New York in 2021.
