The account has gained over 60,000 followers since AOC tweeted about it.
The Twitter account parodying Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has gained thousands of new followers after the Democrat lawmaker posted to the social media platform complaining about it.
"FYI there’s a fake account on here impersonating me and going viral. The Twitter CEO has engaged it, boosting visibility," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Tuesday afternoon. "It is releasing false policy statements and gaining spread."
"I am assessing with my team how to move forward. In the meantime, be careful of what you see," she added.
In the hours since, the account, called Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody), has gained over 60,000 new followers, according to Social Blade. The account now has 124,174 followers at the time of writing.
The account declared both in its username and bio that it is a parody account, which Ocasio-Cortez appears not to understand.
The account poked fun at this, writing in one post, "FYI I have no problem with parody accounts - just the ones that make fun of me."
"If @elonmusk wants to have a chance with me, he’ll immediately ban the parody account of me," another tweet stated. "This is like literally not funny."
"After brainstorming with my staff - I’m going to push Congress to make it illegal to joke, laugh, or make fun of me," the parody account stated. "Parody should be illegal."
The account was also boosted by Twitter owner Elon Musk, who replied with the fire emoji to a tweet that stated, "This might be the wine talking, but I’ve got a crush on @elonmusk."
