After a CNN townhall on Thursday night in which President Joe Biden said that he had been to the US-Mexico border, Fox News asked the White House why he'd said that when it wasn't true.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the President had visited the border back in 2008, when he was on the campaign trail for Barack Obama.
"Why did President Biden say he has been to the border?" Doocy asked.
"Well, Peter," Psaki replied, "as you may have seen, there's been reporting that he did drive through the border when he was on the campaign trail in 2008. And he is certainly familiar with the fact, and it stuck with him, with the fact that in El Paso the border goes right through the center of town.
"But what the most important thing everyone should know and understand is that the President has worked on these issues throughout his entire career. And is well-versed in every aspect of our immigration system, including the border. That includes when he was vice president. And he went to Mexico and Central America ten times," Psaki said, holding up her hand for emphasis, "to address border issues and talk about what we can do to reduce the number of migrants who are coming to the border."
Psaki went on to address Biden's record, which did not include a visit to the border as president, despite the president’s claim Thursday night.
On Thursday, Biden was asked about his plans and current policies on immigration, and why he hasn't visited the border. After he spoke at some length about that, moderator Anderson Cooper asked: "Do you have plans to visit the southern border?"
In response, Biden said: "I've been there before, and I haven't, I mean, I know it well, I guess I should go down. But the whole point of it is, I haven't had a whole hell of a lot of time to get down. I've been spending time going around looking at the $900 billion worth of damage done by by hurricanes and floods and and weather and train traveling around the world, but I plan on— Now, my wife Jill has been down she's been on both sides of the river she's seen the circumstances there, she's looked into those places."
