Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden made a joint statement on Tuesday evening, following their virtual meeting, held from Ottawa and Washington, DC.

This was President Biden’s first bilateral meeting with a foreign head of government, with Biden saying that Canada's number was the first he dialed due to the countries' close friendship.

Biden said the two would work together in a variety of topics, including in rebuilding a "robust economic recovery that benefits everyone, not just those at the top," adding that the recovery would be an inclusive recovery that would support women and minority-owned businesses.

Biden also said that the pair would "double down" on their efforts to tackle climate change, with Biden saying that he will use the US's influence along with Canada in "lockstep" to raise the ambition of others to hit global emission targets.

"We will display the seriousness both at home and abroad," said the president. Biden said a high-level climate ambition ministry would be launched, to "achieve net zero emissions by 2050."

Biden talked of strengthening values at home, by rooting out "systemic racism and unconscious bias from our institutions and our laws, as well as our hearts."

"Today, we agreed to reestablish the cross-border crime forum to work together to modernize our approach to community safety, and... do more to take on racism and discrimination in both our systems."

Finally, Biden said that the two countries would fight together to coordinate approaches to better compete with China and threats to interests and violence.
