The move comes amid a push from Democrats in the Senate urging their colleague from New Jersey to step down following the guilty verdict in his federal corruption case. Menendez was convicted of 16 federal counts, including bribery, extortion, obstruction of justice, and acting as an illegal foreign agent.
According to the Globe, the sources said Menendez will release a statement in the coming days, though it is expected to come sooner rather than later. When he steps down, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will be tasked with appointing a temporary replacement who will serve until the end of his term in January. Andy Kim and his Republican rival, Curtis Bashaw, are both vying to take over Menendez's seat in the November election.
Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were accused of receiving bribes from the Egyptian government along with three local businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes. The DOJ stated at the time that the couple "agreed to and did accept hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes in exchange for using Menendez's power and influence as a Senator to seek to protect and enrich Hana, Uribe, and Daibes, and to benefit the Arab Republic of Egypt." Nadine's trial has been delayed indefinitely.
