President Joe Biden spoke with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer just hours before announcing his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, according to a source who spoke to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins.

In the days leading up to Biden’s announcement, reports surfaced that both Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had been expressing concerns about Biden’s viability as a candidate. Schumer reportedly had a private meeting with Biden last week, during which he presented polling data showing Biden's challenging odds against former President Donald Trump. Biden is currently trailing the GOP nominee in all the major swing states.

Schumer also expressed concerns to the president that a potential loss to Trump could have significant down-ballot consequences which could cost the Democratic Party their current Senate majority.

Following Biden’s announcement, Schumer posted on X, commending Biden's decision and leadership.

“Joe Biden has not only been a great president and a great legislative leader but he's a truly amazing human being. His decision of course was not easy, but he once again put his country, his party, and our future first,” Schumer said.

“Joe, today shows you are a true patriot and great American,” he added.
