"I wasn't supposed to be here." Trump said. The crowd chanted back, "Yes you are!"
Trump walked on stage to Lee Greenwood singing "God Bless the USA" and then began his speech. He gave an account of the assassination attempt on his life from Saturday. "There was blood pouring everywhere but in a certain way I felt very safe because I had God on my side," Trump said of the experience.
Trump described how the bullet flew through his ear and how he could hear the sound of the bullet flying by his head. He added repeatedly, "I'm not supposed to be here."
"The amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at that very last instant the assassin's bullet would have perfectly hit its mark and I would not be here tonight, we would not be together,” Trump added.
After Trump said that he was not supposed to be there, the crowd chanted "Yes you are!" repeatedly.
"I stand before you in this arena only because of the grace of Almighty God," Trump added. He recounted how reports said that it was providential how he cheated death.
“The crowd was confused because they thought I was dead. And there was great great sorrow. I could see that on their faces as I looked out. They didn't know that I was looking out. They thought it was over. When I could see it I wanted to do something to let them know I was okay. I raised my right arm looked at the 1000s and 1000s of people that were restlessly waiting and started shouting ‘Fight, fight fight,'" he said.
"Tragically, the shooter claimed the life of one of our fellow Americans, Corey Comperatore. He was an unbelievable person everybody tells me." Trump also recognized those who had been injured during the shooting. David Dutch, a 57-year-old Marine veteran who was shot in the chest and the liver. 74-year-old James Copenhaver was also struck by the gunfire. Both Dutch and Copenhaver were in critical condition after the shooting but have since been stabilized.
He then had the audience give a moment of silence to recognize Comperatore, and the sacrifice he made during his life. Comperatore had been a volunteer fire chief.
The GOP nominee made the announcement that $6 million has been raised for the Comperatore family. "He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect [his wife and daughter] from flying bullets."
Trump displayed the uniform of Comperatore as he continued to address the audience, speaking of a desire to unify the nation.
Trump told the audience of his policy agenda that will be implemented when he goes into office, saying, “This is the most important election in the history of our country.” He addressed high inflation in the country, illegal immigration, crime rates, and wars happening in Europe and the Middle East.
While addressing immigration policy, Trump displayed the chart that he had looked at as he was turning his head right before the bullet struck his ear in Pennsylvania. "Last time I put up that chart I never really got to look at it. Without that chart, I would not be here!"
"I make this pledge to the people of America. I will end the devastating inflation crisis immediately, bring down interest rates, and lower the cost of energy. We will drill baby drill," Trump stated. "We'll end lots of different things. We'll start paying off debt and start lowering taxes even further."
"Whether you've supported me in the past or not, I hope you will support me in the future because I will bring back the American dream," Trump told the audience.
Trump added, "With great humility, I am asking you to be excited about the future of our country."
