“This horrific act of terror has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends,"
Karen Diamond, 82, succumbed to her injuries last Wednesday, according to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office. Diamond was among a group of demonstrators peacefully marching to raise awareness about Israeli hostages being held in Gaza when 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman allegedly hurled multiple incendiary devices at the crowd. Thirteen others were injured in the attack.
“This horrific act of terror has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends," District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a statement to 9 News. “Our office will fight for justice for all the victims, their loved ones, and the community.”
Prosecutors filed an amended complaint Monday morning, officially upgrading two of the existing charges related to Diamond from attempted murder to first-degree murder. In total, Soliman now faces:
- Two counts of first-degree murder
- 52 counts of attempted first-degree murder
- Eight counts of first-degree assault
- 18 counts of attempted first-degree assault
- Two counts of third-degree assault
- Two counts of using an incendiary device
- 16 counts of attempted use of an incendiary device
- One count of animal cruelty
In addition to state charges, federal authorities last week unsealed a 12-count federal indictment against Soliman, charging him with hate crimes and the use of explosives. The indictment includes nine counts of violating federal hate crime laws and three counts of using fire or explosives in a felony. According to federal prosecutors, Soliman specifically targeted the demonstration organized by “Run for Their Lives,” a group advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The attack occurred outside the Boulder County Courthouse.
Federal documents state Soliman entered the area carrying a black container filled with at least 18 Molotov cocktails and a backpack sprayer filled with a flammable substance. He allegedly threw two of the incendiary devices at the demonstrators while yelling, “Free Palestine!” Witnesses also heard him shout inflammatory anti-Israel remarks, including “How many children you killed,” “We have to end Zionists,” and “They are killers.”
Authorities later recovered a handwritten manifesto from Soliman’s vehicle. The document referred to Israel as a “cancer entity” and declared, “Zionism is our enemies until Jerusalem is liberated and they are expelled from our land.”
During an interview with investigators, Soliman reportedly admitted he had searched online for pro-Israel events and chose the June 1 gathering after recognizing Israeli flags and signs. He told officers, “I decide[d] to take my revenge from these people.”
Soliman, an Egyptian national, originally entered the US legally via Los Angeles International Airport on a B1/B2 tourist visa on August 27, 2022. That visa expired on February 26, 2023, but Soliman remained in the country unlawfully.
Despite his expired visa, he filed a claim with US Citizenship and Immigration Services and was granted work authorization by the Biden administration on March 29, 2023, which was valid through March 2025.
