On Thursday afternoon, the FBI issued a warning on Twitter that they had received "credible information" of a threat to synagogues in New Jersey.

"The FBI has received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ. We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility. We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police," their message read.

"We are taking a proactive measure with this warning while investigative processes are carried out," the FBI said in a follow-up tweet.

According to local News 4 New York, a "senior law enforcement official" said the public warning was made out of "an abundance of caution."

The NYPD tweeted out at 5:03 pm that they are "aware of an FBI Alert of 'credible information' of a broad threat to synagogues in New Jersey. In an abundance of caution, the NYPD's Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureaus are working diligently alongside the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the FBI to ensure the safety and well-being of in every area that encompasses our Jewish citizens and synagogues here in New York City and the tri-state area."

Law enforcement told local ABC News that while the "nature of the threat" was not clear that it was not a bomb threat.

ABC learned that the threat was not specific to any one synagogue.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy tweeted, "I have been in touch with the @NewJerseyOAG, @njohsp, and @FBINewark regarding a credible threat to synagogues in NJ. We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected."

Hoboken Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla said that there is a stronger police presence at synagogues Chabad of Hoboken and United Synagogue of Hoboken.

Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura said, "Due to the alert issued by the FBI, the Essex County Sheriff's Office is increasing our presence at synagogues within Essex County."

"We will continue to collaborate with our municipal, state, and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of the public," Fontoura added.

USA Today reports that the American Jewish Committee said it was "deeply alarmed" and "Our thoughts are with the local Jewish community at this time."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
