Former Liberal MP Raj Grewal has been charged with four counts of breach of trust and one count of fraud over $5,000 by RCMP.
The RCMP claims that Grewal did not report millions of dollars in personal loans to the ethics commissioner and that this "constitutes a criminal breach of trust."
"It is alleged that Mr. Grewal failed to report his receipt of millions in personal loans to the Ethics Commissioner, in circumstances that constitute a criminal breach of trust," The RCMP said.
"It is further alleged that Mr. Grewal solicited loans for his own personal benefit in connection with the use of his public office, and that he administered his government-funded constituency office budget for his own personal benefit."
The MP from the Brampton East riding left the Liberal caucus in disgrace after it was revealed that he was seeking treatment "related to a gambling problem that led him to incur significant personal debts."
It is estimated that Grewal had incurred more than $1 million in debt.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
