Numerous United States government agencies have been impacted by a global cyberattack, sources have told CNN.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has been called in to help remedy the situation, and crews have begun investigating.

"We are working urgently to understand impacts and ensure timely remediation," executive assistant director for cybersecurity Eric Goldstein told CNN.

No information has been released regarding the source of the attack.

According to Goldstein, the attack targeted agencies' "MOVEit applications," software used to upload, download, and manage secure, encrypted file transfers.

As CNN reports, Thursday's attack comes on the heels of a series of hacks targeting state governments and major US universities. Johns Hopkins University, for example, was hit with an attack that impacted "sensitive personal and financial information."

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
