Crockett filed the official paperwork on Monday in order to run in the race.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has entered the Democrat primary for the US Senate in the state of Texas, as Colin Allred has dropped out of the race. The official launch of her campaign, which is set to be announced later on Monday, comes after she has been considering the move.
Crockett filed the official paperwork on Monday in order to run in the race, where she will be facing Rep. James Talarico of Austin, according to CBS News. In the Republican primary, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, as well as Rep. Wesley Hunt are all facing off in a locked primary, and it is expected to be one of the most expensive Senate races of the midterms.
Allred dropped out of the race earlier on Monday, and instead of filing the paperwork to run for US Senate, he opted to run in the new 33rd congressional district race in Texas. On Monday, Allred said in a post, "In the past few days, I've come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers Paxton, Cornyn, or Hunt."
"That's why I've made the difficult decision to end my campaign for the U.S. Senate. But I'm nowhere near done serving my community and our state. Today, I'm announcing my campaign for Congress to represent the newly drawn Congressional District 33," Allred added.
Previously, Crockett has only said that she would run for US Senate if there was polling that showed she would be able to win in a general election race against a Republican. She has previously won in some polling for the Democrat primary.
Crockett has become known for being a progressive firebrand in Congress and has made national headlines for some of her spats with President Donald Trump. Recently she said that the US should start deporting white supremacists instead of illegal immigrants.
