The man convicted of attempting to murder Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a politically motivated act of violence was sentenced to 8 years in prison on Friday. The attempt on Kavanaugh's life was made at the justice's home in 2022 as the court pondered overturning the Roe v. Wade decision.

While prosecutors asked for at least 30 years in prison for Nicholas Roske, who now goes by Sophie after deciding in prison that he identified as transgender, Maryland federal Judge Deborah Boardman handed down a little more than 8 years.

Roske, who some outlets are referring to as "she/her," will be on supervised release for the remainder of his life. Boardman also used the female pronouns for the male would-be assassin. Roske researched what weapons to use before flying from California to Maryland with the express intention of killing Kavanaugh.

It was only because he noticed a law enforcement presence that he did not carry out the attack, calling his sister instead. He was found with a Glock 17 pistol, ammunition, zip ties, pepper spray, a lock pick, a thermal imaging monocular, tactical gloves, and a crowbar.

Boardman took Roske's trans identity into consideration in giving the sentence. "What Sophie Roske did, devising and nearly executing a plan to kill a Supreme Court justice in an attempt to change a Supreme Court ruling and the compensation of the court is absolutely reprehensible and will be punished," Boardman said.

Daily Wire reporter Luke Rosiak was in the courtroom as the sentence was delivered. "Judge Boardman, a Biden appointee, is referring to the defendant as Ms. Roske and asking whether 'she' will be placed in a women’s prison and given hormone replacement. The implication is that if not, she will be given a shorter sentence," Rosiak said.

"Judge Boardman is asking how Roske’s transgender status should impact her sentence, and demanding evidence that longer sentences provide more deterrence. Asking why, 3 years later, 'ms roske' is a risk to the public," Rosiak further reported.

Roske's mother was also on hand. She attested, per Rosiak, that she has "attended PFLAG meetings and learned about the LGBTQ+ community."

"I am committed to going on this journey with Sophie," Roske's mother said.

In court, Roske said, in a "deep baritone," "I have been portrayed as a monster, and this tragic mistake I made will follow me for the rest of my life."

Boardman also said that the lesser sentence was attributable to Roske's failure to actually kill Kavanaugh or his family. The Hill, which used female pronouns for the convicted would-be assassin, said that Boardman "credited Roske’s decision to abandon the plot, her lack of criminal history and remorse. The judge also said she had taken into account that President Trump’s executive order will place Roske, a transgender woman, in a male facility."

The Biden administration had said that criminal men who believe they are women should be housed in women's prisons. Many incarcerated women have spoken out against this, but have been referred to as bigoted for doing so. Biden also allowed men who believe they are women to undergo medical sex change treatment at taxpayer expense while in prison.

Trump put a stop to this tomfoolery, which apparently influenced Boardman's decision to give Nicholas "Sophie" Roske a lesser sentence. In court, Roske said he "I was under the delusion that I could make the world a better place by killing [Kavanaugh]."

Assistant US Attorney Coreen Mao contradicted all of this, saying that Roske poses "a very real threat to our system of government." Roske had also threatened the lives of other Supreme Court Justices.

"No judge or public official should have to live under the fear thinking that any moment at any given day at any given time they could be killed in cold blood simply for doing their job," Mao said.
