Firearms are prohibited on Capitol grounds, and police are investigating why he drove to the Capitol building.
According to CNN, footage of the incident captured six officers surrounding an SUV, where two of the officers had their guns draw. They were pointed at a man who emerged from the vehicle on the driver's side.
As he got out with his hands above his head, the man walked away from the car and the officers lowered their firearms in response.
He was cuffed and more officers arrived on the scene. The man spoke to one officer and also gestured towards the car. Capitol Police have closed the area while they investigate, and congressional staff have been told to avoid the area. The man taken into custody was not immediately identified.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the US Capitol," Capitol Police said in a statement.
The incident is the second of its kind this year. In February, a man had charged Capitol Police officers while he was carrying a loaded shotgun. At the time, he demanded that he "talk to a member of Congress."
The man, Carter Camacho, has parked his SUV near the Capitol complex before he rushed “several hundred yards” and was taken into custody by police.
Some staffers have also been detained for possessing guns while going into the Capitol building, including the chief of staff to Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas.
