The 99-0 vote included Rubio casting a vote for himself. He will now vacate his senate seat serving the people of Florida and will take his place as the head of the State Department, per The Hill.
"No one on this body can doubt that Marco Rubio is an intelligent man with remarkable understanding of American foreign policy and a very deep commitment to the American Dream," said Chuck Grassley of Iowa in remarks on the Senate floor.
Rubio is the first of Trump's cabinet picks to be confirmed and it happened on the first day of the second term of his presidency. Many other nominees were questioned during confirmation hearings before Senate committees last week and are expected to be confirmed in short order.
Rubio served in the Senate for 14 years and is the son of Cuban immigrants to the United States. While in office, he serves as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
In his remarks during his hearing, Rubio advocated for an America first policy. Ashley Moody will replace Rubio to represent the people of the Sunshine State.
