Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is expected to select his Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to be the next senator for the Buckeye State. Husted will take the seat vacated by JD Vance, who will be sworn in as vice president on Monday alongside President Donald Trump, who will serve his second term after a four year gap filled by the Biden administration.

DeWine had been rumored to be discussing the seat with former presidential hopeful Vivek Ramawamy, who ran against Trump in the primary before dropping out of the race and throwing his full support behind the 45th president.

Husted had been planning to run for governor in 2026 as DeWine's successor. Sources told Signal Statewide that Husted, however, is the likely choice for senate.

DeWine will be holding a press conference at 1 pm local time and while a spokesperson told Signal that the subject of the presser was unknown, "several Republican sources told Signal that DeWine will announce that he’s picking Husted." Signal also stated that Husted "would have a hard time winning a Republican primary for governor in 2026."

Ramaswamy may also be in the running for the governorship come 2026, as his position in politics is not yet set. Ramaswamy had reportedly met with DeWine to talk about taking Vance's vacated spot. Trump had reportedly encouraged Ramaswamy to seek the position.

When DeWine was asked on Thursday who he expected to choose to replace Vance, he said "Later," following up with "not too much later."
