Vivek Ramaswamy is now under consideration by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to fill Vice President-elect JD Vance's vacated senate seat, according to Politico. Ramaswamy, an Ohio resident, had pulled his name from contention after after he was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with Elon Musk.

The outlet reported that Ramaswamy met with DeWine over the weekend to discuss the appointment following the Vance's resignation from his position as his inauguration for the vice presidency nears. Trump reportedly encouraged Ramaswamy to take the position if appointed.

"I’ll have an announcement probably next week," DeWine told the press last week.

Ramaswamy is also reportedly considering an Ohio gubernatorial run while he is still involved in his efforts at DOGE with Elon Musk. However, the outlet reports that Trump as well as Musk are of the opinion that having Ramaswamy in the Senate would lead to better outcomes for DOGE's efforts. DOGE, a non-governmental agency, is expected to deliver recommendations to Congress for sweeping cuts to government spending by July 2026, the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

All this comes after DeWine brought Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted down to Mar-a-Lago last month to visit with Trump. Husted has been cast as a favorite for Senate the appointment by some, according to NBC News. However, he could also run for governor if Ramaswamy is appointed instead. Without Ramaswamy in the mix, the way would be clear for Husted to have little competition with other Republicans to become governor, Politico reported.

“DeWine isn’t incentivized to pick Ramaswamy for Senate, but Vivek is also the one roadblock to Husted,” one source familiar with the matter reportedly said. The Ohio governor's office responded to the situation through press secretary Dan Tierney, “Neither Governor DeWine nor our office has commented on any possible candidates for the pending appointment."

DeWine's appointment will hold the seat until a special election can be held in 2026.
