The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for COVID-19 has been approved for use in children aged five to 11 in Canada, Health Canada says.

According to health data, the vaccine showed 90.7 percent efficacy in preventing COVID-19 in children, with no serious side-effects identified.

Health Canada says that Pfizer-BioNTech will be required to keep ongoing studies to monitor any issues related to the vaccine.

"Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to closely monitor the safety of this vaccine, and will take action if any safety concerns are identified," a Health Canada statement said.

The vaccine will have a slight change to it for children, meaning doses need to arrive before they can begin distribution to those in the age range.

Doses are ready to be distributed by the provinces upon arrival.
