The campaign to recall progressive Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon has collected more than 700,000 signatures before Wednesday's deadline, vastly surpassing the official amount needed to proceed with the recall election.

Fox News' Bill Melugin reports that the campaign collected 717,000 signatures before Wednesday's deadline. Of those 717,000 signatures, 566,857 need to be verified in order for the recall to proceed. The campaign's original goal was 700,000 for "padding."

Melugin reports that the recall campaign received over 150,000 signatures in the last few days after two El Monte police officers were killed by a Los Angeles repeat offender released by George Gascon.

"Their goal was 700k for 'padding'. They received over 150,000 in the last few weeks since 2 El Monte PD officers killed," Melugin said.

The fight to recall the George Soros-backed Los Angeles District Attorney began in 2021 after Gascon assumed office in December 2020 and immediately began sweeping reforms to the criminal justice system in the city. Those reforms have created a revolving door for criminal over Gascon's lack of prosecution.

The campaign comes after a successful campaign in San Francisco to oust progressing District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

This is a developing story.
